CLABSI Project Summary

Our Change Project aimed to determine factors that contributed to central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and to develop an intervention that will reduce this complication in the hospital setting. Some contributing factors to this complication are staffing ratios, length of time the central line is in place, frequency of dressing changes, and training for he nursing staff on CLABSI prevention. Upon discussing with ICU nurses, we decided what intervention could be most beneficial in the hospital setting, and we developed a concept of an online course that would need to be completed by ICU nurses as a mandatory yearly education and recertification. Our budget for creating and implementing the online course is $950 for all anticipated expenses, and the timeline for creation of the course and implementation into practice is five months. The online course has eight modules that focus on addressing all aspects of infection prevention, sterile techniques, and guidelines to follow to provide evidence-based practice care for patients. Impact is determined by re-evaluating infection rates every 6 months to evaluate the course’s success. Working to prevent CLABSI occurrences will promote patient health and safety for patients in the ICU setting, decreasing the risk of complications and prolonged hospitalizations.
