Summary
High turnover rates contribute to staff shortages, increased workload, burnout, and a decline in patient care quality. Nurse retention can be incredibly costly, and it is estimated to cost $56,300 per every RN who leaves their job. For the average hospital, this can equate to roughly $3.9 to $5.8 million in losses per year.” (2024 NSI National Healthcare Retention and RN Staffing Report). Our initiative focuses on implementing a structured mentorship program for new graduate nurses at Vanderbilt’s 6 East Med-Surg unit. By pairing new nurses with experienced mentors, the program aims to improve job satisfaction, provide professional support, and foster a sense of community. The ultimate goal is to reduce turnover and enhance patient outcomes by creating a safe and welcoming environment. The program’s success will be measured by tracking nurse retention rates, job satisfaction, and patient outcomes annually. Through collaboration with nurse managers, hospital leadership, and HR, we have created a long-term solution that can be expanded to other units. Investing in nurse retention is essential for maintaining high-quality patient care. This project represents a proactive approach to improve overall healthcare outcomes.
