Description
Since the 18th century the American South the Appalachian highlands have each played distinct cultural and political roles on the American imagination. Both are thought of as American Others, strange to the nation while simultaneously being familiar. So how strange or familiar are the South and Appalachia to each other? Ultimately, the crucibles of race and class have determined how the two overlapping regions have shared kinship or discovered differentness, often at the same time.
