Description
Laredo, Texas, and the rest of the Texas-Mexico border remains haunted by the past. Every February, Laredo hosts the largest Washington’s Birthday Celebration in the country, a city-wide event consisting of various festivals. The biggest of these events revolves around the Society of Martha Washington Colonial Pageant and Ball. In this pageant, young Latinas wear elaborate colonial ball gowns worth thousands of dollars in order to celebrate George Washington’s birthday at the cost of their own cultural identities. My fiction piece titled, “Americana,” follows Gloria Perez, an eighteen-year-old debutant, as she struggles to navigate the complexities of her Mexican and American identities.
