Description

More illiterate people live in India than in any other nation on earth (around thirty five percent of the world’s illiterate population). Lack of access to quality education is the defining marker of social inequality in India and perpetuates the legacy of the caste system. Numerous international organizations have been created to build and maintain schools in India. Many of these internationally funded schools are focused on Dalit (or untouchable) children who are routinely excluded from education by a lack of funds and social pressures. Dr. Davis and Dr. Muccini visited India in January 2011 with one such organization, the Ninash foundation. They will speak about that trip and about the challenges facing Indian schools today.
