Description

Writers from Flannery O’Connor to Ann Patchett have taken as their inspiration stories in the news or historical accounts of such “famous” stories. Yet the results are neither fictionalized journalism nor creative non-fiction. The writers intend to write fiction that is much like other narratives not based on sources. Many questions could arise from such a process. Award-winning fiction writer Sandy Hutchins will consider how writing around a “fact” or “idea” can hamper or enfranchise the creative imagination. She will use excerpts from two pieces of her own fiction as we set up the question and then convert the reading/lecture to an opportunity for discussion. What kinds of truths are we dealing with here and how can we write them to best effect?
