Description
Symbolic interactionists suggest that identity is constructed in everyday interaction. As more of that interaction becomes computer-mediated, the rules for impression management, politeness, face-threatening behavior, and expressions of affinity change. Moreover, opportunity for self-editing and identity-experimentation exists in ways not possible with face-to-face interaction. This session explores the way identity is constructed and negotiated in computer-mediated communication, drawing on examples from text-messaging, Youtube vlogging, Facebook threads, and Twitter feeds.
