Description
Italian American communities maintain their ethnic identity through ritual celebrations of festivals. In the past, Italian immigrants employed festivals celebrating saints, gatherings, or simply the sharing of food to develop intergenerational relations and general social relations with other ethnic groups. Today, these celebrations reaffirm the Italian Americans’ relation to their ancestral heritage as well as to the principles of their adopted country. These festivals create a sense of community and an intense feeling of togetherness. Essentially, they establish and maintain what Victor Turner refers to as “communitas,” such as a feeling of sacred community, a sense of group cohesion, and homogeneity.
