Description
This illustrated talk will trace the use of particular landscapes as metonyms for national identity: Blake's "green and pleasant land" of England, the "forty shades of green" of Ireland, the "amber waves of grain" of the provocatively-named American "heartland." We will examine patriotic songs, landscape poetry, landscape painting and the iconographic meanings of Monument Valley, used in Westerns to symbolize the heroic American character.
